NALINI SRINIVASAN (@LINI)

Former Laboratory Technician
Retired after decades of exceptional service to our Dept and seeing us through our lab certification!

This is my 46 years of service in NUS! I was working in W.H.O Research and Training Centre in 1974 before joining the Department. An enjoyable, fruitful & learning experience in research, tissue culture, immunological & microbiological techniques, imparting these knowledge techniques to staff and students, safety & management of both staff and the laboratories.

The Biofilm lab, portrays a younger, more energetic group of researchers with a warm & friendly environment!

My weekends or holidays, I enjoy cooking my Mum’s favourite Peranakan and Indian food, baking, gardening & floral arrangement and watching TV serials.

Life is Loving, Listening, Lifting, Learning & Living.

Former FYP student
Presently: Teacher in-training at National Institute of Education, MOE Scholar

Just a student who intentionally stumbled into this extraordinary biofilm lab to experience research for the first time. Thoroughly astounded by the number of things that can be learnt and the amicable work culture of the lab.
Dedicates time outside to drumming, guitar, calisthenics, frisbee, cycling, anime, drawing (mostly doodling during lecture but don’t tell the prof…legend has it that I have sketches of most of them on my printed notes). I’m more of a mountain person who will invest time and money to scaling new peaks but most of all, I’m the definition of a foodie although some say it is more like a trash can but I’ll take it either way as long as there is food. Some days I wish I was good at coding so I could build a robot but other days I just want to be a Pokémon master. Can’t wait to learn more from this lab!

An FYP student learning her way around real science in an amazing biofilms lab!

Out of the lab, you’ll most probably find me cooking, baking and most of all, eating! I enjoy making breads, cakes, and non-sterile PBS. I also love being chased by my adorable 5-year-old nephew and chasing my favourite dog, matmat (don’t tell my other dog, mimi, though! I love her too!) My retirement dream is to open a little bakery/cafe with some of my closest friends when we all retire!

Grateful to have the opportunity to learn from this lab and experience real science for the first time!

Outside of the lab, I’ll probably be having my daily fix of frontier coffee and eating away while trying to fulfil my student responsibilities. My stomach is a bottomless pit – I steal friends’ food every other day, and if you’re not careful, I might eat the agar plates in the lab watch out! Kidding. BHI agar media smells somewhat like bread but it makes me nauseous after a while. Blegh.

Microbial things fascinate me, so I'm excited to work in this lab!

People say that I laugh and scream a lot, but if I'm really quiet, I probably have a song stuck in my head and I'm trying not to sing it out loud – it's a pity that karaoke outlets are closed for now, but you'll probably catch me there once they're open! I also have a talent for not being able to crack eggs. Or cook them properly.

A newfound interest of mine: Microbes! To think that these teeny tiny organisms have so many applications and uses! I'm excited to learn more as I work in the Ch'ng lab and delve deeper into the field of Microbiology :)

Besides academics, I'm an avid reader of Manga & Manhwa (Japanese & Korean comics) and enjoy playing computer games. Dance is another hobby of mine - if you spot me doing small dance moves, I'm probably dancing to a choreography (Likely Kpop) I watched before!

All things microbial-related are totally intriguing and fun. Microbiomes and biofilms have such huge relevance in our lives, looking forward to learning and gaining more from this lab!

My mind constantly hovers between states of nonsensical chaos and complete emptiness. I find chonky cats absolutely hilarious, show me a slightly overweight cat and watch me laugh my ass off.  Also, I’m not in any way affiliated to that Chinese restaurant called Din Tai Fung (So stop asking me!)

Excited to venture into the world of microbiological research and learn more about these tiny organisms with LMB!

I’m probably the most indoor person you will meet, and my free time is mostly spent on watching anime or trying out new crafts, since my stamina is only reserved for jamming in the karaoke every alternate weekend, and going on 7-hour long shopping sprees!

Former Research Intern
Presently: Pursuing Nursing Degree at NUS

I am so STOKED to be given an opportunity to work in LMB as a year 2 Nursing student. While taking a module in microbiology, I was briefly tossed into the world of microbes and infectious diseases. I was so fascinated by the inner workings of how they are impacting us today, how they have altered and influenced the course of mankind so much, and even how all these could tie into my knowledge and training as a nurse. I was hooked. I knew I needed more microbiology in my life. Long story short, I stumbled across LMB (intentionally), reached out and before you know it, I am interning here. What better way to broaden my interest in microbiology and research experience!

MUGIL MUTHU (@MUGIL)

Former Laboratory Technician
Presently: Pursuing Post-Graduate Studies

Recently stepped in to the World of Microbiome through bacteriology, with a hope of exploring this world as wide as I can. My research interests are biofilms, infectious diseases and eventually find new interest in this journey. Currently doing Bachelors in Biomedical Science and working as a Lab Technologist in Ch’ng Lab. In this lab, I am working on dual species biofilms of E. faecalis with S. aureus. Under Dr Ch’ng guidance, I learnt important factors of research and constantly motivated to develop myself. I am also certified to perform animal laboratory work and trained to do E. faecalis genetic works. Other than wet lab work, going to seminars on bacteriology and infectious diseases are my most favourite things to do in between the work.

Outside of the lab, I also love to have variety of coffee and cheeses while I spend my free time in knitting and making art crafts. Additionally, I also have the habit of collecting different fragrances (mostly flower and fruit smells). Motto for me: “If you want to shine like the Sun, first burn like the Sun”, essentially, I believe in hard work!!

Former FYP student

Presently: Research Assistant at NCID

Before university, I've always found microbes to be interesting ever since first learning about them. However, the sparks were only really ignited during university where there were more opportunities to understand them on a deeper level, especially so in Prof Ch'ng's module where we learnt about their associations with human health and diseases, as well as their applications in many areas of life. There are so many different types of microbes out there, each with their own unique characteristics and behaviors. It's like they're these tiny creatures with different personalities waiting to be discovered! It's a fascinating world I hope to venture into.
Some hobbies I have include crocheting, reading and occasionally waking up early to catch the sunrise. Other things I really enjoy are listening to music from a special group called Treasure (who are very much comedians as much as they are musicians!) and reading manga from my favourite series Yona of the Dawn :) Time spent with my friends and family are also moments I cherish a lot!

DARIEL WILBERT TANOTO

Former Summer Research Intern

After desperately looking for something to do over the summer, I (un)intentionally stumbled upon LMB and boy, am I glad to join this lab! (Although I do not really know the other lab members since I am posted to SCELSE for my summer internship…) Junhong introduced me and safe to say, piqued my interest in the world of microbes and biofilms! It was really an amazing experience to be able to join the LMB family for my first ever research experience!

Outside of academics, I enjoy going out with my friends to try out less well-known food spots and satisfy our bottomless stomachs. I also enjoy watching films and shows, cooking (assuming my inertia doesn’t get the best of me), playing sports (again, inertia…) and travelling to new places!

One thing that really sums up who I am as a person is that my current stealth stat -100 due to my 13-year-long stint in Chinese Dance coupled with a previous injury that I never sought medical attention for. Every time I stand up my ankles will crack. Loudly. Besides that, I am an expert in dabbling: from playing instruments (piano, cello), sports (track, wushu), graphic design, videography, to learning languages (French, Japanese, Korean), there’s little I haven’t tried my hand at (although this comes at the expense of actually mastering one…)

I’m really grateful to have been given this opportunity to see the inner workings of scientific research and I’m excited to add to my repertoire of skills!

Navigating my way through the vast world of microbiology…

I was fascinated by several microbiology-related modules and decided to embark on this exciting journey with LMB! Really looking forward to a year of discovery, learning and experiencing what being a lab student is like.

Something I am always obsessed with? I love love LOVE everything matcha - have gotten a dress in a similar shade too. And outside of school, you can usually find me volunteering. I do believe strongly in giving back to the community which I have gained a lot from!
