Teaching and research interests include biofilms (no way!), microbiomes and also malaria/parasitology. I am also involved in pedagogical research on how better to promote microbiology education.

Teaching philosophy: people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care! I try my best to connect with students by being open and transparent, fun and quirky, enthusiastic and provocative. What's the point of imparting knowledge to students or training skilled researchers if I fail to impart my love for research and life?

I was introduced to the world of microbiomes and biofilms when I took the course LSM3228 back in Year 3 Sem 1 and was lucky to have been taught by one of the best LSM lecturers in NUS, Dr Jun Hong! Also had the privilege to take up an educational UROPS project for the “No Guts No Glory” Microbiomes-themed card game and learn more about the intricacies and methodology of educational research.

I lead a very active lifestyle and enjoy a wide variety of sports, particularly basketball, badminton and taekwondo (although I have retired from competitive taekwondo from a slew of fighting-induced injuries). That being said, I’m also an avid foodie, always eager to try all kinds of food, especially when I travel overseas! As for indoor activities, I enjoy watching documentaries, talk shows, singing karaoke with friends and playing pool/billiards.

Over the past year I have gradually developed an interest in microbiology through the various LSM courses I’ve taken, such as Dr Ch’ng’s course on microbiomes and biofilms. I am grateful for the opportunity to embark on my first research experience in LMB and delve into exciting biofilm research at a deeper level during my final year as an undergraduate!

This may sound strange to some, but I love planning things and feel most at peace creating to-do lists. Outside of the lab, I also enjoy hiking, travelling to new countries, volunteering, reading, playing the piano, good TV shows, nano-block puzzles, and spotting fungi during nature walks!
