JUNHONG CH'NG (@HON)
Senior Lecturer, Principal Investigator

Teaching and research interests include biofilms (no way!), microbiomes and also malaria/parasitology. I am also involved in pedagogical research on how better to promote microbiology education.

Husband & dad of 4 kids, cycling, fishing, camping, nature, legos, nerf blasters, war robots, drums, guitars.

Teaching philosophy: people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care! I try my best to connect with students by being open and transparent, fun and quirky, enthusiastic and provocative. What's the point of imparting knowledge to students or training skilled researchers if I fail to impart my love for research and life?

Grateful for the opportunity to work in our biofilm lab, where I’ve learnt so much under Dr Ch’ng’s mentorship!
I’m working on Bioshield Pro, a bioelectric device that (hopefully) zaps sink bacteria in hospital critical care settings until they give up. Outside of medtech, I’m usually eating the pistachio ice cream from burnt cones, trying to play a convincing game of tennis or watching the odd game of football (I love Barcelona!) with my friends at 3am. I also moonlight as an amateur creative writer, and I enjoy carving out some personal time to read and write when inspiration strikes :D

FYP student
Just like any other FYP student who is new to and considering a potential career path in research, I was initially excited yet unsure if research truly suited me. My fears were quickly alleviated, as Dr Ch’ng navigated with me step-by-step through the ups and downs of scientific research. I was particularly inspired by his teaching philosophy, and I could feel how much he cares about student learning.
My free time (although not much) is always dedicated to table tennis, cuesports and Chinese Calligraphy! But nothing beats some alone time watching the best Chinese and Korean dramas and listening to my favourite Chinese, Korean and Cantonese playlists after a long day of school/work.

4MC UROPS (education) student
During my time at NUS, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to cross paths with Dr. Chng Jun Hong. It all began when I took his module, LSM3228: Microbiomes and Biofilms, a class that not only deepened my understanding of microbiology but also revealed Dr. Chng’s infectious passion and drive for the subject. His energy and mentorship inspired me to pursue internships related to microbiology and its real-world applications.
I was also lucky enough to join his lab through a 4MC educational UROPS, where I further developed my research skills and gained a clearer perspective on how research can translate into impactful solutions across different fields!
Outside the lab and lectures, I enjoy collecting beautiful things, particularly watches and perfumes. I’m fascinated by the craftsmanship, detail, and artistry that go into creating them! There’s something captivating about how a well-made timepiece or a carefully composed fragrance can tell a story, through design and scent!
