JUNHONG CH'NG (@HON)
Senior Lecturer, Principal Investigator

Teaching and research interests include biofilms (no way!), microbiomes and also malaria/parasitology. I am also involved in pedagogical research on how better to promote microbiology education.

Husband & dad of 4 kids, cycling, fishing, camping, nature, legos, nerf blasters, war robots, drums, guitars.

Teaching philosophy: people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care! I try my best to connect with students by being open and transparent, fun and quirky, enthusiastic and provocative. What's the point of imparting knowledge to students or training skilled researchers if I fail to impart my love for research and life?

LOW JEEN LIANG
MBBS UROPS student
Grateful for the opportunity to work in our biofilm lab, where I’ve learnt so much under Dr Ch’ng’s mentorship!
I’m working on a bioelectric device that (hopefully) zaps sink bacteria in hospital critical care settings until they give up. Outside of medtech, I’m usually eating the pistachio ice cream from burnt cones, trying to play a convincing game of tennis or watching the odd game of football (I love Barcelona!) with my friends at 3am. I also moonlight as an amateur creative writer, and I enjoy carving out some personal time to read and write when inspiration strikes :D

CARRINA CHAN LIN AI
8MC UROPS-REx student
I’m Carrina, and I’m excited to be joining the LMB lab as a UROPs student! While searching for microbiology labs, I came across the LMB lab and decided to reach out - I’m thrilled to be here! I have been having a great time doing research here. The welcoming lab environment and guidance from Dr Ch’ng have made learning through research an enjoyable and rewarding experience! :D
When I’m not in the lab, I enjoy sipping bubble tea, collecting cute plushies of fluffy cats and Pokémon, and going for long walks to recharge!

SARAVANAN NETRA
FYP student
I’m Netra, a final-year student excited to join LMB as a FYP student under the supervision of Prof Jun Hong. My research interests lie in microbiology, host–microbe interactions, and translational biomedical research, and I enjoy gaining hands-on experience in experimental design and data analysis. I’m grateful to be part of a supportive and collaborative lab environment, which makes research both challenging and rewarding. Outside the lab, I enjoy sketching and painting, experimenting with different coffee flavours, hand embroidery, designing clothes, and building Legos.

TAILA THIA NAWAZ
4MC UROPS student (Business-Education)
Working on an exciting multidisciplinary UROPs that blends microbiology and business. Over the course of a 4MC UROPs, I’ll be developing a marketing strategy for “No Guts No Glory”, the brainchild of Dr. Ch’ng Junhong and Chan Chuu Ling. I could not have ideated this project without all the guidance this far! I’m excited to be part of this lab and introduce a level of scientific research and analysis rigour to marketing theory.
Outside the lab, I’m a runner, 70s music enthusiast and breakfast lover.

FANG XILIN
Research Assistant / PhD student (Duke-NUS)
Really happy to be part of the lab and kickstart my PhD journey under the guidance of Dr Ch’ng Junhong (NUS) and Dr Jianhong (DUKE-NUS)! I’m currently working on projects related to alternative proteins, and I’m excited to explore how microbiology research can contribute to making future food systems safer and more sustainable :D Outside the lab, I enjoy watercolor painting and sketching (though I’m definitely still learning), and I’m also a big fan of reading fan fiction whenever I need a break from research.
